Sometimes it seems as if there is a parallel universe, as events unfold that defy common sense and belief. Sometimes perhaps it is comic, sometimes tragic and sometimes seemingly stupid. A random set of recent reports combined with a Government whose words and actions are diametric opposites make one wonder how we arrived here.
IF IT’S PRIVATE PUNISH IT
One of the Government’s first acts was to impose VAT on private education. As a statement of dogmatic war on private education, it made its point. But at the same time, they wish to see the most deprived given the opportunity for the best education. Private school Eton works with the public sector to provide first class education for bright young people in deprived areas, for example Dudley and Oldham. Middlesborough was to be the next, a new build school for 480 more bright sixth formers. But the Council and Brigitte Philippson have cancelled the project, rejecting Eton’s £1million a year, citing better value if the public building money went to SEND pupils instead. Or perhaps, a Labour association with Eton would be dogmatically beyond the pale? Can we not simply give the best education possible to as many children as we can? At least the Government is consistent in punishing the entire private sector financially while spending the private sector generated taxes on more pay, pensions and benefits for public sector workers. Dishonest, tragic, stupid?
THE NET ZERO RELIGION
Energy bills are rising to pay for Sizewell B nuclear power. Nuclear is an essential part of carbon free energy. British businesses are hampered by the most expensive energy costs in the G, far more than European nations, holding back growth. The haste to get to net zero is higher domestic bills in the short to medium term as more wind and solar farms emerge. But the national grid patently cannot keep up. So much so that in 2024 SEAGREEN, the UK’s biggest offshore wind farm, was told to restrict output for around 75% of the year: it was paid by Government £65 million not to produce energy. And more subsidy, some £1.5 billion of taxpayers’ money, is pouring out to build more windfarms as quickly as possible. A slow down perhaps would be sensible. Comic, stupid?
“X” via GROK UNDRESSES WOMEN AND CHILDREN.
This facility provided by artificial intelligence courtesy of Grok provides fake undressed sexualised pictures of women and children on request without their consent. This brought some complaint and the immoral Musk-owned X reacted by turning it into a profit centre only available to subscribers as if that met the concern. This is even unacceptable to the Prime Minister. And he is sworn to stop it if X does not desist. But this is so obviously outrageous disgusting abuse, it should have been stopped immediately. Currently, typical of UK regulators, OFCOM is looking into it. No decision. Even Malaya and Indonesia have stopped Grok. The ever-moral guardian Musk complains that any restriction is another curb on freedom of speech: it has nothing to do with freedom of speech and such remarks show what a danger to society he is, having charge of information flows, satellites and social media. He believes people are entitled to abuse and humiliate women and children with fake pictures, sexualised for perverse delectation. If not tragic and stupid, this would be laughable. Even if Musk desists from this perversion voluntarily, which he says he is doing, OFCOM and the Prime Minister surely must instruct that this must never occur again.
UAE CONDEMNS ISLAMISM IN BRITISH UNIVERSITIES
The Arabic, strongly Muslim, UAE has withdrawn support for UAE students to attend British Universities for fear they will be radicalised by Islamic extremists. This absurd irony arises because British institutions and authorities have for years, for fear of being called anti Islam, allowed Muslim extremists to flourish unharmed. Reports say that radicalisation is also a major problem in British prisons. When will the authorities finally wake up to the reality that there are bad Muslims just as there are bad Christians and Hindus and call them out and shut them down without hesitation. Yet still we have a Government determined to single out the Islamic religion for special consideration on a path to adopt a definition of Islamophobia.
SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT PUTS MEN IN WOMEN’S PRISONS
Even when we have had available the Supreme Court Ruling determining the reality that biological sex determines sex, at least when it comes to private space, Scotland continues to put men who identify as women in women’s prisons. And now the Scottish rulers want a court declaration from Scotland that this is legal, despite the Supreme Court’s decision. And Brigitte Philipson, despite her own statement that the position is now clear, argues in court that the ruling is unfair to trans people. And so, no guidelines appear from Government, despite the Equality and Human Rights quango having produced the draft long ago. And even the NHS seems still to let trans men in women’s space. Another comedy if it was not tragic and stupid. Why can we not move forward decisively on even the most basic issues?
NEVER DO WHAT YOU PROMISE
The OBR is reported as saying that most of Labour’s financial decisions were not in their manifesto. The Prime Minister says he is helping working people whoever that may be, still unknown. But unemployment is at record levels for recent times. Ministers say they need to get young people who in record numbers are not in employment or education or training (neets) back into work: but hikes in the minimum wage and other employment decisions make it harder not easier for employers to give them jobs. Defence and growth are the core priorities: no material new money is budgeted to be available for defence, and growth is stagnating and is predicted to continue to do so. The Chancellor announced how small businesses would benefit from business rates reductions while they were at the same time being burdened with new valuations of premises which have increased the costs considerably: so much so that she now is reversing things to help pubs survive, but what about restaurants, other leisure outlets and retail. Tragic lies, no comedy, but lots of stupidity?
GIVE CHINA A BASE IN THE HEART OF UK INFRASTRUCTURE
China is often referred to as a hostile state, as it regularly cyber-attacks the UK among other things. It is the primary ally and supporter of Russia, a sworn UK enemy waging actual war by invading Ukraine and an almost war against Europe by sabotage and disruption: we are told to get “war ready” to prevent Russia attacking Europe. The USA and security services have warned against the risks attached to the embassy proposal. Prime Minister Starmer cannot say there is no security risk but is likely to approve the new Chinese embassy in the heart of the City of London, no doubt a base for espionage of the basic and most sophisticated varieties. But perhaps he thinks if he is nice to XI, he in turn will be kind on trade terms. Of course, Xi will pocket what he wants, the Embassy, and may make a meaningless gesture. This is the art of Starmer negotiation: give to your enemy and expect kindness. No commercial or business or relevant experience at the heart of UK Government turns us into naive patsies. But this gift to Russia’s ally again betrays the lie that Starmer puts security first. Comic, tragic, stupid and dishonest?
BRITISH SOLDIERS CAN BE SUED UNDER ECHR
It is reported that if the UK sends armed forces to Ukraine they will be exposed to litigation in the European Court of human rights by the enemy Russia and others. Yet the UK it is reported has the option to opt out of this risk on their behalf but is proposing not to do so. Sending the military into possible war with such threats sitting over them will be a disgrace. Already Generals have warned the Government about this problem, which has manifested itself after the Afghan conflict. More cause for Putin and others simply to laugh at the tragic comedy of leaders whose sheltered lives in the world of human rights render them useless to govern.
The list could go on. Somebody needs to wrest the UK’s future out of the hands of the clowns before its too late.
