Will Europe with the UK fill the moral void being left by the USA? Is the USA colluding with Putin to engineer Ukraine’s surrender?
USA CARELESS FOR RUSSIAN ATROCITIES
The USA perhaps has become, if it was not before, Putin’s puppet as the price of diesel trumps defeating the monstrous Putin, war criminal a thousand times over in his Ukraine war, Europe’s modern-day Hitler.
The USA has failed miserably in its support of Ukraine as its people are murdered each day by indiscriminate bombing of civilian targets, and the targeted destruction of their infrastructure, whether hospitals, libraries, schools or power stations, trains and so on. The recent pictures of residential flats razed to the ground and the loss of 30 people as Putin targeted buses are the tip of a ghastly barbaric iceberg. This is Putin executing his war of atrocities, a war which he initiated without provocation 4 years ago. And now the USA is striking commercial deals with him and fuelling his war machine.
FUEL BEFORE LIFE
President Trump has shown Putin favour for a long time, while paradoxically imposing sanctions and arming Ukraine: but for some time now the arms can only arrive if paid for by Europeans supporting Ukraine. That is perhaps reasonable given that the USA has subsidised the defence of Europe for decades. But now it seems Trump ultimately eyes commercial profit with Russia, irrespective of the moral disgrace that propping up Putin involves.
The USA decided to go to war with Iran, as they see it, for good reason and they may or may not be right. That in turn, as the USA has only partly succeeded in its aims, has resulted in a powerful Iran holding the world to oil and gas ransom with its hold over the Straits of Hormuz: the price of oil and gas is a yoyo. The USA asked Ukraine to tie its defensive hands and not to attack Russian energy infrastructure some time ago and suspended its embargo on Russian diesel to ensure greater supply. Of course it is fossil fuels which pay largely for Putin’s atrocities. Is it the final straw that the USA has now done a deal directly to purchase Russian diesel to ameliorate temporarily the price of diesel? That the midterm election in the USA is imminent suggests that Trump may be motivated to garner votes for Republicans by showing his power to help their domestic energy costs. The problem that more innocent Ukrainians will die as an indirect result seems of no consequence to the USA.
The world generally does not know how this diesel deal reflects or affects the relationship between Russia and the USA more generally. Have Trump and Putin agreed other bad things with a nod and a wink: for example, Putin has long called for the resignation of Zelensky and elections in Ukraine and the USA now echoes Putin’s desires. Is it a coincidence that Elon Musk’s Starlink, it is reported recently, deprived Ukraine of certain satellite assistance? Cutting off the ability to get early warning of missile attacks on cities must mean risk of more civilian deaths: but the USA does not seem to care. It seems the USA is content for Putin to attack Ukraine energy but not for Ukraine to attack Russian energy. Is this part of Trump’s promise to Putin to engineer Ukraine’s surrender? We can only guess?
It is clear that Putin is playing the USA for fools and yet again pulling the White House strings as reflected in Trump tweets. His lack of morality seems to chime with the rest of the US Government. This White House is as puerile in the art of the deal as it gets and abandoning all decency to boot. The TACO eponym for Trump has been exposed too many times and his Government’s immorality combined with incompetence is threatening lives globally.
CAN EUROPE FILL THE VOID?
Europe meantime, the USA’s best allies, are also being attacked daily by Putin in a quasi-war like way, a hybrid war, according to European leaders and their intelligence and military experts. But Europe has shown itself to be almost powerless to influence the Ukrainian plight of aerial bombardment as it lacks the weaponry due to defence neglect. So, the likes of Chancellor Merz of Germany and PM Burnham of the UK are strong on words and photoshoots but lacking in bite. Germany at least is upping its defence game and can aid Ukraine more in time, but the UK, unlike other European countries closer geographically to Russia, lacks urgency or real will to bear the cost. So, Europe is on Ukraine’s side but hardly able to protect it.
It beggars belief that the USA can be supporting Putin whenever it suits them. It beggars more belief that they can be cosy with Putin given his moral corruption and criminality. The White House staff and the USA Governmental and other institutions seem quite silent on this outrage. They seem careless about being Putin’s dog. Reports suggest that the USA may shut off weapons supply, as well as intelligence assistance, unless Zelensky kowtows to their wishes, so dooming more Ukrainians to early death. Europeans need to do more, resist the USA approach and ramp up weaponry provision to close to a war footing and spend accordingly, so that Russia fears Europe and Europe can defend Ukraine. The USA cannot be relied on and has surely forfeited its moral leadership. Time for Europe with the UK at the forefront to fill that new void. But will it?
Ukraine’s President Zelensky is perhaps the only leader currently showing true leadership and courage worthy of the respect of decent people worldwide.
