CAPITULATION TO TYRANNY IS ANCHORAGE CHARADE

That a red carpet was rolled out for a wanted war criminal in Anchorage and that Putin was greeted as a friend on first name terms disgraces America and the rest of the Western world. Given Trump is genuine about so little, this will have been pure game playing and may have been a genius dealmaker ploy but, when seen by citizens of all nationalities across the globe, Trump’s subservience to a murderer, rapist and child abductor will only have served to demean America and validate Putin.

According to Trump his meeting with Putin contained much agreement and good progress. Trump turned his past commitment to obtaining a ceasefire, which Putin did not want, on its head and he adopted instead Putin’s preference for a final Peace Agreement as the best option. Putin himself made not a single concession. All Trump’s preceding bravado threatening sanctions if a ceasefire was not agreed vanished as a puff of smoke, but then Trump is puff and nothing he says can be relied on. He and Putin, the inveterate liar, have so much in common, is it surprising they fawn over each other so much? All Western commentators, broadcasters, military and foreign diplomacy experts concluded Putin played Trump like a puppet and got what he came for. All hopes that Trump had learnt Putin has the same objectives as ever, which are to totally annihilate or neuter Ukraine, vanished just like Trump’s bravado. Perhaps the only conclusion can be that Trump does not care if Putin achieves his truly disgusting aims through endless killing.

European  leaders and Zelensky need Trump if any peace through strength is to be achieved, through stronger economic sanctions and fully committed military capability. And so, they do the only thing they can do, as Keir Starmer has done, which is to praise Trump’s efforts to end the killing and bring about peace. Everybody knows that by getting Trump’s agreement to cease to care about a ceasefire Putin has bought himself endless time to continue the devastation of Ukraine and the murder of civilians until he deems himself ready to negotiate a capitulation where he wins all the territory he wants. And Europe is now complicit in this charade while continuing to pretend that its coalition force of the willing can act as a deterrent to Putin to enforce a peace deal.

Sir Richard Kemp, an ex-military colonel, is so scathing about European leaders as they have made their nations powerless to resist Putin without USA help, that he concludes they deserve no seat at the negotiating table. Those same leaders now say Trump will provide security guarantees, but unless these are fulsome and cast iron they will not achieve a lasting peace agreement. Trump’s declared aim was to stop the killing, which was dishonest as his volte face demonstrates. Instead, he has extended the killing and European leaders remain at his whim.

It may well be that Trump will now let Europeans try to secure peace, knowing that they have to capitulate without him. He may indeed see himself as better off taking a back seat, even though he is incapable of doing so, and coming to the rescue to force land concessions later. Who knows? If the proposition, widely held by those who know Trump well, is that he has no strategic long term planning ability is correct, the outcome now remains random. Given no morality can be applied as neither Trump nor Putin exhibit any, all forecasting of the outcome is pure guesswork. The only certainty is that Putin is getting what he wants, the West led by a man with no leadership qualities is muddling through, and Ukraine must continue to endure Putin’s evil destruction. How long this will go on is anyone’s guess.

The best hope is that those to whom Trump listens will tell him the only way to get Putin to bend is maximum sanctions and maximum force and he will see that light soon and stop his phoney love-in with Putin and end playing charades with Ukrainian lives.
