BREXIT – PART 2 – LIBERAL DEMOCRATS’ AND LABOUR’S POSITIONS – DISHONEST MANOEVERING

The LDs have consistently said they campaign for remaining. But their intolerance of the Brexit supporter is an entirely illiberal approach. “Bollocks to Brexit “, their slogan, well sums up their level of respect for others’ views. Liberal? No.  They now espouse that a second referendum is the way to sort it out but also declare that, if a majority support Brexit again, they would not respect the result. Democratic? No. This party is undemocratic enough to say that the 17.4 million leavers’ view should be ignored.

This is the party which, because the first past the post electoral system tends to result in few seats for them and with the majority party commanding significantly less than 50% of the vote cast, has constantly cried the system is undemocratic. However, they now say that if elected under that system, probably with considerably less than 50% of the votes cast, they would now revoke the Article 50 notice and so keep the UK in the EU. And so the system which they have argued is undemocratic now justifies them overturning totally the biggest plebiscite in memory!! Intellectual dishonesty of epic proportions.

As for Labour, it is clear that their position on the Brexit issue has simply moved in accordance with their assessment of which is the more likely to see them win an election. Of course, every different position, they say, is always in the national interest. The final (or is it) position now is another fence sit. While senior leaders there declare remain now is their personal preferred option,  officially they want to support Brexit by negotiating a new deal which is so close to staying in the EU as to not be worth doing, then put that again to the people in another referendum with the other choice being to remain: and they are undecided which they will recommend. Intellectual summersaults or intellectual dishonesty?
