This delightful restaurant is situated in the midst of an historic deer park and for a cosy lunch on a chilly Autumn Day it ticks a lot of boxes. A roaring fire, warm and friendly staff, a notable art collection and a delicious menu of local and seasonal food.
The menu changes with the seasons and availability but is consistently good and fairly priced.
From the current menu the Dressed leaves and beetroots, with pickled walnuts and the local Binham Blue cheese, is outstanding as is the slow cooked salt beef with horseradish and mashed potatoes especially with a side of cavolo nero with orange, garlic, and chilli. A version of this can be found in these pages see Cavolo Nero (or other greens) with Orange Zest, Garlic, and Chilli
There are lots of meaty options, cooked over an open fire in the Elk Room; local venison sausages, red deer rump, aged beef in various forms and Blythburgh pork and all come with appropriate and delicious accompaniments.
And if that is not tempting enough there was even a chicken bacon and leek pie or some roast halibut. It seems that everything on the menu sounds and is delicious – it’s hard to choose.
It was no surprise that the dessert options including treacle tart, or a shot of sloe gin jelly, were tempting too as were the local cheese options of Kidderton Ash, Wells Alpine and Blacksticks Blue served with excellent home-made biscuits and chutney.
This is an outstandingly good restaurant made even more special by the great asset of excellent staff.
