Sri Lanka in February is an ideal place to escape winter in the UK for a sunshine boost. The Galle Face hotel in Colombo is less than an hour’s drive from the airport. Originally a colonial building, it is stunning to look at. Situated facing the Ocean, on the Galle Face Green. It describes itself as an “icon”.
Renovated a few years ago, it dates back to 1864 and the building and fittings are well maintained, giving a feeling of quality. The staff are welcoming and attentive and checking in and out is a personal and efficient experience. The plentiful public areas are tastefully grand, with several lounge areas decorated with stunning artwork, to relax and enjoy a drink.
Bedrooms as always range in size and price, but all are well equipped with modern facilities and working Wi-Fi. Because the seaward outlook is a real treat, particularly at sunset, a room with a balcony or terrace is nice to have. Service is consistently excellent.
The central seaside location means that many sites, such as the National Museum, are accessible from the hotel, as well as the prime shops and a market, with many restaurants within walking distance. A special feature of this delightful location, rare in Colombo, is the welcome breeze it experiences, toning down the heat at this time of year.
For a hotel of this size, the food is of consistently good quality with a range of eating places, including some fine dining, as well as family friendly arrangements. The local Sri Lankan food in the buffet is a highlight. The a la carte prices were reasonable. Hoppers, thin pancakes in a bowl shape, often served with eggs are an excellent breakfast choice.
The saltwater swimming pool is impressively large and a good shape for lap swimmers and is located right next to the beach. The spa and gym are modern and well equipped. An unusual activity is the twice weekly tour of the hotel, an opportunity to reflect on the building’s special place in history, reinforced by the resident historian to fill in the past.
This is a high-end hotel in a delightful setting, a great place to stay and to be looked after by nice smiling people – it seems that nothing is too much trouble for the outstanding staff.
