An Audible listen of 25 hours and 45 minutes to get immersed in and enthralled by. A stunning tale, superbly written by Rohinton Mistry and outstandingly read by Vikas Adam.
The story takes you into the personal lives of four people, brought together through tailoring, in the lead up to India’s 1975 National Emergency, and its effect on them. You can experience the stench, the heat and the dirt of India and have your face all but rubbed into the raw cruelties of the caste system amongst other things. And yet you can savour the scents, the tastes, and the colours too, but most of all you can admire, at close quarters, the dignity and graciousness of the four beings in this tale despite their circumstances. It is both appallingly shocking and heart-warmingly tender.
What to do once you have finished it? Start it all over again of course.
