by Sherbhert Editor

It’s that time of year again and despite some worrying weather conditions earlier in the year, there is an abundance of delicious fruits available now.

There are around 7,000 different varieties of apple worldwide and 2,500 of those are grown in the UK, and there are around 1,000 varieties of pears worldwide and 700 of those are grown in the UK. For more details and facts about these fabulous fruits see  www.britishapplesandpears.co.uk where you can find the perfect fruits for your taste.

As well as Bramley cooking apples which are great for making Apple Sauce or Apple Dessert Cake there are some outstanding dual-purpose varieties such as Peasgood Nonsuch and Howgate Wonder which are perfectly sweet to eat as they are or they can be cooked to a delicious puree needing no added sugar at all.

As for pears, Conference, Concorde, William and Comice are all good and widely available. If they are not ripe, store them in the fridge and then bring out a few at a time to room temperature for a day or two to ripen. Or you could use unripe fruit to make Spiced Pear Chutney.

Bircher Muesli is an easy way to make a delicious healthy breakfast that is ready to eat in the morning or take with you to work.

In a bowl or suitable transportable container, moisten a portion of organic porridge oats with some organic whole milk or yogurt or kefir and stir in a grated eating variety of apple. You could add some chia seeds or raisins or nuts too if you like. Cover and leave in the fridge overnight. Check it in the morning and the oats should be soft and creamy. Stir in a little milk if the mixture seems too thick.
